Description
Originally designed in the 1950s as a scaled-down version of the iconic Tomboy, the Tom Thumb was a light, nimble flyer made for the smallest diesel engines of the era. We’ve brought this timeless design into the modern age — preserving its vintage charm while updating it for today’s RC technology and laser-cutting precision.
With an increased wingspan of 30 inches (76 cm), this version is optimized for electric power and micro RC systems. The structure stays true to the original: a minimalist, lightweight balsa build that delivers a stable climb and graceful glide, perfect for relaxed sport flying in parks or open fields.
This downloadable laser-cut plan includes all parts vectorized for precise cutting (DXF/SVG formats), along with build guidance for modern RC setup. Construction is straightforward and satisfying:
Fuselage: Simple side-and-former structure with curved sheeting; designed for ease of assembly and clean covering.
Wing and Tailplane: Classic flat-frame build, covered in lightweight tissue or modern equivalents.
Faithful to Vic Smeed’s original spirit, this version of Tom Thumb is ideal for modelers who appreciate the aesthetics of vintage flight and the elegance of simple, functional design.
